Alternative fuels produced from different feedstocks or processing technologies will differ in chemical composition from each other and from petroleum-based fuels. In this work, the composition of an alcohol-to-jet fuel (ATJ) derived from isobutanol was analyzed using GC/MS; its flash point, density, viscosity, speed of sound, and surface tension were measured; and its bulk modulus was calculated. These measurements were used to develop a mixture containing isocetane and isododecane isomers that closely matched the physical properties of the ATJ. This mixture contained 25% isocetane. The performance of a Yanmar L48V diesel engine was tested using various mixtures of ATJ and petroleum based jet fuel, JP-5. When the ATJ in the JP-5 dropped to 60%, the engine performed poorly and was not able to reach engine speed within 30 seconds of start time. In contrast, pure JP-5 reached engine speed within approximately 4 seconds.
