Carbon-carbon bond activation is a unique way to quickly construct organic molecules that could be difficult or impossible to achieve under traditional synthetic conditions. Extrusion of CO through transition metal catalysis is one such example of this C-C activation. Rhodium (I) catalyzed decarbonylation of ynones to give diyne and internal alkyne products has been developed. This C-C activation method utilizes linear ketones with no need of auxiliary directing groups or ring strain.
