Inorganic coordination chemistry provides an approach for making supramolecular structures capable of energy and electron transfer to form long lived charge separated states. Using [Ru(bpy)3]2+ compounds functionalized with ligand-functionalized aminoethylglycine (aeg) allows us to study the use of metal-coordination and a flexible, easily modified chain to link [Ru(bpy)3]2+ with an excited state donor and acceptor. Ru(bpy)(methyl-bpy-PTZ)(methyl-bpy(aeg-MV2+), where PTZ is phenothiazine and MV2+ is methyl viologen, shows the possibility of electron transfer between donor and acceptor linked by aeg. The [Ru(bpy)3]2+ with aeg is functionalized with a phenyl-terpyridine (Фtpy) ligand and coordinated to pyridine-substituted aeg derivatized with a donor/acceptor molecule (eg, phenothiazine (PTZ) and methyl viologen (MV2+)) upon addition of Zn2+. The emission quantum yields and lifetimes of these compounds are collected and the photophysical properties compared. Crosslinking the [Ru(bpy)3]2+ compound to either the phenothiazine or viologen results in a decrease in the [Ru(bpy)3]2+ lifetime as well as increased rates of radiative and nonradiative decay. These donor/acceptor pairs were selected to allow for the use of transient absorbance spectroscopy to test, for the first time, if (and how much) electron transfer is a significant quenching mechanism in these metal coordinated artificial oligopeptide [Ru(bpy)3]2+ complexes.
