CDr polymers, or polymers that are capable of continuous depolymerization mediated by a reaction-based detection unit, represent an emerging class of stimuli-responsive materials that are characterized by their ability to provide an amplified response to specific chemical or physical signals. This presentation will focus on poly(phthalaldehydes), a poly(acetal) CDr polymer that is unique in its ability to completely depolymerize to monomer in seconds to minutes both in solution and in the solid state. Specifically, we will discuss our work to develop poly(phthalaldehyde) derivatives with improved properties and to apply poly(phthalaldehydes) as stimuli responsive materials, including as responsive microcapsules, as shape changing materials, and as reagents that provide signal amplification in the context of diagnostics.
