Metal chalcogenide nanocrystals ("quantum dots") have been the model systems of choice to explore the effects of nanometer-scale spatial confinement on the behavior of electrons in semiconductors for the last thirty years. The relationship between the optical and electrical properties of quantum dots and the electronic and vibrational structure of their inorganic cores is still an area of intense investigation, but the relationship between these properties and the coordination chemistry at the surfaces of quantum dots has, in the last decade, emerged as an equally important area of study. This talk explores the power of surface functionalization of nanocrystals to enhance and finely tune the dynamics of electronically excited states and the redox activity of quantum dots, and their physical interactions with other nanoparticles, molecules, and solvent, and demonstrates some powerful analytical techniques for characterizing the complex, heterogeneous surfaces of these particles.
