Hazardous chemicals are widely spread in the environment around us. Although the presence of hazardous materials is relatively small (trace levels), but determining the types and their levels is very important to prevent errors above a predetermined threshold. Therefore, analysis of types and amounts of hazardous substances is very important to be done. This kind of analysis requires an appropriate method and equipment that works well and has high sensitivity. Gas chromatography (GC) is one of the most important tools in Analytical Chemistry. GC is commonly used as analytic technique for quality control as well as identification and quantitation of compounds in a mixture. One way to test the performance of the GC is by injecting hydrocarbon standard mixture before performing analysis of samples. Hydrocarbon standard mixtures that have developed in this research contain normal alkanes with carbon number between C20 to C40. Those ranges will also be beneficial to the laboratory which conduct their daily chemical analysis related to poly aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides, and hazardous chemicals that have retention index value between 2000 to 4000. Retention Index (RI) is a parameter that does not have dimensions, which change the retention time (Rt) of compound into a new value. RI is more stable against small changes that occur in the chromatographic conditions, so its value is more reliable than Rt. Indonesia is a tropical country that has large area of tropical forest. By this opportunity, hydrocarbon compounds contained in natural product such as banana leaves, bee wax, petroleum wax, plant wax, and paraffin; have observed its potential for used as a component of standard reference materials. Method used for making the candidate of Hydrocarbon Reference Materials (Hydrocarbon standard mixture), which contain the mix of hydrocarbon from natural products and individual hydrocarbon standards (purchased from company), consists of three main stages: 1) Make a solution of hydrocarbons from natural products; 2) Make a mixture of stock solution of each individual hydrocarbon standards C20H42, C22H46, C24H50, C34H70, C36H74, C38H78, and C40H82; and 3) Mix those two solutions in the ratio of 3:14. The purpose of utilization of natural material, among others, is to reduce the economical price of hydrocarbon standard sales and to utilize natural resources in Indonesia.
