Low-molecular-weight chromium-binding substance (LMWCr) carries Cr from the tissues via the bloodstream to the urine and has been proposed to be the biologically active form of Cr when subjects receive supra-nutritional doses of Cr.  Recently the contiguous peptide of LMWCr has been sequenced, and the synthetic peptide of this sequence in combination with Cr increases glucose uptake and increases Akt phosphorylation by skeletal muscle cells in the presence of insulin and increases insulin sensitivity in mice.  The results of spectroscopic studies to elucidate the environment of the chromic ions bound to the peptide are described.
