Biomass pyrolysis is a process in which lignocellulosic biomass is thermochemically converted into renewable fuels and chemicals. In order to develop the next generation of industrial scale biomass pyrolysis reactors, a fundamental understanding of the micron and sub-micron level heat transfer, mass transfer, and chemistry is necessary [1,2]. Here, we develop multi-level approach to studying cellulose pyrolysis with the development of new techniques to de-convolute the complicated process of cellulose pyrolysis. We present an overview of experimental approaches used to identify limitations of kinetics as well as heat and mass transfer in pyrolyzing cellulose. Our findings provide a basis for the continued development of biomass pyrolysis processes as well as directions for development of biomass pyrolysis reactors. [1] Mettler, M.
