A new family of quaternary [(MX)z]m(TX2)n[(MX)z']o(T’X2)p (where X = Se, M = Sn, T = Mo or Ta and T’ = V or Nb) ferecrystal compounds have been synthesized by expansion of the modulated elemental reactants method. These compounds are not available from bulk synthesis methods and represent unprecedented compositional control on the local level. X-Ray Reflectivity (XRR), In-plane and out-of-plane X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Electron Probe Micro Analysis (EPMA), Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM), as well as electrical transport properties were used to characterize this new family of structures.
