Work with space- and ground-based telescopes reveals that emission from water and organic molecules is commonly found in the infrared spectra of disks surrounding young stars. Because these diagnostics probe the inner planet formation region of disks (within a few AU), they offer the opportunity for new insights into questions such as how and when planets form and whether disks participate in the synthesis of molecules. I will describe how spectra taken with the <i>Spitzer Space Telescope</i> and ground-based facilities can be used to address these kinds of questions.
