Instrumental analysis lecture is one of the most challenging courses to teach; it has large material content impossible to cover in full, the students must have strong foundation in physical chemistry and due to instrumental restrictions laboratory almost never correlates with the lecture. The application of a single type of active learning exercise during the lecture component may not be effective in enabling full student's participation, not only due to variability of the material, but also due to differences in student learning styles. Here I present the mix-and-match toolbox of known techniques that are redesigned to facilitate effective learning of instrumental analysis with minimal impact on class content. The tools that will be discusses are: guided discussion, case studies, argument mapping, short group activities (&lt;20 min) and visual aids (&lt;5 min).
