2,3-fused polycyclic indoles are a ubiquitous structural motif natural products and pharmaceuticals. Dearomative indole annulations are the powerful strategy to access this complex class of molecule. Our group has developed the aza-(4+3)-cycloaddition reactions of aza-oxyallyl cations intermediates for the synthesis of heterocycles. Our efforts to expand the scope and utility of cycloaddition reactions of aza-oxyallyl cation intermediate led to the development of an dearomative aza-(3+2) cycloaddition reaction, which provides pyrrolidinoindolines heterocyclic products in good yield. The development of this new heterocycloaddition will be discussed.
