There has been continuing interest in the fundamental concepts underlying the assembly of polymer grafted nanoparticles in polymer based hybrid materials, and the consequences of this assembly on end-use properties. Here we focus on two applications: (i) the use of these grafted systems as membranes for gas separations and (ii) the competition of the self-assembly of these nanoparticles with the crystallization of the matrix polymer into which they are embeded. The consequences of these ideas on the biomimetic assembly of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles will be discussed.
