I will highlight our recent work into the fundamental theory underlying surface hopping, and I will show how Tully's version relates approximately to the Quantum Classical Liouville Equation.  I will show how and why decoherence emerges as the missing element of Tully's original ansatz, and I will offer a few applications to show the power of the method for predicting the outcome of photoexcitation.
