Cooperative effects between two metal centers within a bimetallic complex have emerged as powerful tools for the development of new reactivity modes in organometallic reactions such as olefin polymerization. A β-oxo-δ-diiminate ligand featuring two bidentate binding pockets centered around a bridging carbonyl oxygen, which has previously been utilized in the synthesis of dizinc complexes, has also provided a viable platform for the synthesis of heterobimetallic complexes in a close spatial proximity. Heterobimetallic complexes of group 10 metals with main group metals have been targeted: group 10 metals (e.g. Ni and Pd) for their ability to polymerize olefins, and main group metals (e.g. Mg, Al, and Zn) for their ability to transfer alkyl groups between late transition metals and insert CO2 into metal-carbon bonds. The cooperative effects of heterobimetallic complexes on ethylene polymerization will be discussed, as well as reactivity studies on the reaction of these complexes with CO2 and olefins or epoxides. Ultimately, these complexes will be tested for their ability to utilize abundant CO2 as C1 feedstock in polymerization reactions.
