The determination of trace level of guanidine derivatives as the emerging contaminants in the environmental waters was the aim of this research. The analyzed water was collected from specific parts of Utah State including Utah Lake, Provo River and some Marsh water. We reported two different detection method in simultaneous detection of six guanidine derivatives to provide a direct comparison between integrated pulsed amperometric detection (IPAD) and suppressed conductivity detection (CD) with ion exchange chromatography (IC). To detect and quantify the guanidine contaminants, which due to the strong guanidinde base moiety are protonated in neutral aqueous solution, new stationary phases for IC columns based on glutamic acid functionalized resorcinarenes bound to divinylbenzene macroporous resin were prepared. Due to the lack of a suitable chromophoric or fluorophoric group, IPAD and CD were used in detection of six guanidine contaminants included guanidine, methylguanidine, dimethylguanidine, agmatine, guanidinobenzoic acid and cimetidine. Suppressed conductivity is the simplest detection approach while integrated pulsed amperometric detection detects more guanidine compounds than suppressed conductivity detection, enabling the detection of cimetidine and higher sensitivity to all of the analyzed compounds. The linearity of guanidine compounds for IPAD and suppressed conductivity were within 0.1-10 mg/L. The peak area precision were 0.01–2.89% for IPAD and suppressed conductivity. The sensitivity for 6 guanidine compounds using 2 detection techniques varied considerably from 9.0 – 177 µg/L at ambient temperature.
