Dynamic magnetic properties of nano sized Ni particles can differentiate the extent of formation and coarsening under various redox environments.  Low temperature, low frequency SQUID based AC susceptibility enables the clear identification of particle sizes below 10 nm.  The mechanism for reduction of Ni 2+ ions dissolved in 10 YSZ, either in the bulk or predominately at the surface of the grains, is modeled by the reaction kinetics.
