Activation energies derived from temperature-dependent luminescence intensities and lifetimes were determined for several series of the title compounds. The 3dπ* [Ru(II)] and 3ππ* [Rh(III)] emissions displayed activation energies in distinct temperature ranges. The key to this measurement is the production of partially oxygenated complexes by the pressurization of glycerol solutions with O2 followed by rapid cryo-freezing of the O2-complex equilibrium. Extension of the studies from homo- to heteroleptic complexes provides a hierarchy of well-defined energy levels that can aid in elucidating the exciton migration process.
