The scope and limitations of the preparation of 2-trialkylsilyloxy-vinylketene iron (0) tricarbonyl complexes was explored via silylation of acylates derived from several different alkyl and aryl sources. Priliminary results with acylates deried from E and Z 1-lithiopropene revealed a lack of stereohemistry. Yields are competitive with alkylation and acylation. These prepared vinylketene complexes are able to be cyclized with a variety of alkynes to form highly substituted benzene ring derivatives, which may have useful biological activity.
