Synthesis of energy carriers and petrochemicals from C<sub>1</sub> feedstock remains a formidable challenge with far-reaching implications of replacing current petrochemical feedstock with alternative carbon-based feedstock such as natural gas, coal, and biomass. The dehydrative condensation of methanol-to-hydrocarbons occurs via an indirect hydrocarbon pool mechanism where methanol reacts with entrained olefinic or aromatic species in zeolite micropores initiating a sequence of steps leading to the formation of products and regeneration of the co-catalytic hydrocarbon pool species. This presentation will discuss mechanistic consequences of this dual olefin-arene methylation cycle, specifically, the intrinsic catalytic behavior of HZSM-5 zeolites enabled by the discovery and development of single unit-cell MFI materials and the role of crystallite size in determining light olefin selectivity.
