Vitrimers represent a new class of thermoset polymers, which can be healed and reshaped at elevated temperatures while maintaining mechanically-robust, solvent-resistant properties at service temperatures. Most vitrimeric materials reported to date have been limited to polyester resins and polybutadiene rubbers. We have synthesized polyhydroxyurethanes thermosets from bis(cyclic carbonates) and polyamines; these networks are highly cross-linked and display excellent mechanical properties at room temperature. Stress relaxation analysis performed at elevated temperatures indicates a gradual Arrhenius-type activation of relaxation; as a result, these materials can be recycled after failure. We will present comprehensive investigation into this new class of healable thermoset resins.
