The federally approved Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) is one of the several programs of the New York City-Division of Environmental Protection (NYC-DEP) whose aim is to ensure that industrial companies do not dump heavy metals and toxic chemicals via their wastewater into the public sewers. Such violations can have a severe impact to the environment since all combined sewers fill their capacity during heavy rains and wastewater is directly discharged into New York City's waterways. According to the inspection procedure, samples are regularly collected, stored, preserved and analyzed at the DEP labs by checking the adherence to the parameters of the industries’ DEP-issued permits. These procedures ensure the quality of the wastewater that industries, such as electroplating, pharmaceutical and jewelry ones, discharge daily.
