A 1:1 dual-CFB cold model was built to help understand the solid transfer strategy for a 50kWth dual-CFB CaL/CLC hot rig. Molochite and iron particles were used as bed materials. Test work showed that the solid transfer between the two beds can be controlled to a high level of stability despite the fact that it is pneumatically transported and the bed particles are significantly denser than normal FBC bed material. The circulation rate can be flexibly adjusted by the gas velocity and bed inventory in the bed and tracer tests showed that only a very limited gas leakage took place in the system. The results suggested that the dual-CFB system can be scaled up and is a very competitive choice for CaL and CLC reactors.
