Metal mediated reactions represent a vital class of reaction, critical in both academic and industrial settings. While the general principles of these complex reactions are well known, each process is often more complex than our general outlines suggest, with features unique to each application and sometimes each substrate. In this presentation, several case studies will be described where mechanistic interrogation of a specific metal catalyzed process produced generally important insights; revealing details of ligand discovery, catalyst activation and turnover – along with the discovery of new reactions. The importance of industrial-academic collaboration will also be highlighted during the presentation.
