We have devised a new method for the selective functionalization of aryl-nitroso compounds with Cu(II)-halides. The transformation is effective for a wide range of substrates containing both EWG and EDG, and gives rise to a variety of nitrogen- and halogen-substituted arenes. The method has been extended to include a subsequent oxidation or reduction step to obtain the corresponding anilines or nitro-arenes, respectively. The operationally easy halogenation reaction takes place under mild reaction conditions with a high regioselectivity.
