There have been significant advances in photocatalytic oxidation processes over the past 40 years. However, photocatalytic materials have yet to become competitive for applications in water purification and processing. We have prepared hybrid photocatalysts by combining robust nanoparticles with highly active molecular catalysts. In particular, an iron terpyridine complex has been grafted onto the surfaces of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in order to study the potential for a surface mediated photo-fenton reaction. Oxidative degradation of orange II, a model dye compound, was observed in the presence of the hybrid photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. The role of the support material is probed by grafting the molecular catalyst to supports with varying band gap structures.
