The past two decades have seen an increased research interest in first row transition metal based catalysts; they are attractive alternatives to rare and expensive precious metal based analogs. Employing redox active ligand frameworks, such as iminopyridines around first row transition metals has proven to be a successful strategy to enable the 1st row metals to mimic the reactivity of the precious metals. We will discuss our novel approach to the chemistry of the earth abundant elements via incorporation of redox non-innocent phosphinyl radicals into iron, cobalt and copper complexes. Particular focus will be the preparation and characterization of such systems and understanding the interactions between the radical ligands and the metal centers.
