The synthesis and structural characterization of the bridging ligand, 1-methyl benzimidazole diphenylphosphine (MBDP) and its coordination with Au(I) and Ag(I) metal ions is reported. Two ligands coordinate to the metal ions in head to tail fashion forming a metallacycle coordination consisting of strong M-M bonding interactions with Au-Au = 2.808 and Ag – Ag =3.017 Å. The dinuclear complexes were observed in non-polymeric form with notable differences in coordination around the metal centers. Linear coordination is observed for the gold, while the silver shows distorted tetrahedral arrangement. We were also able to bring together two silver dimers by a second bridging ligand, diphenylphosphonic acid, to form a silver tetranuclear complex. The X-ray crystal structure of this new tetranuclear silver(I) triflate complex shows a capsule-like feature. The coordinating ligand as well as both dinuclear and the tetranuclear compounds reported here are luminescent. The emission is suggested to be primarily ligand based π- π* transition in the dinuclear systems, but shifts to metal centered emission in the tetranuclear Ag(I) species. The details of these studies will be reported.
