The aim of the presentation is to introduce a direct approach to systematically investigate and clarify the relevant aspects related to the water interactions of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). Water vapour uptake ability of the 2D layers of cellulose nanocrystals was investigated using Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) equipped with the humidity module. In addition the changes in solid state rheology due to water induced swelling of the nanoporous CNC  network when directly immersed in water were monitored. Results obtained by QCM-D were compared to data achieved using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) with an attempt to explicitly quantify the amount of water strongly interacting with CNC surfaces and with CNC network. Both the limitations and the advantageous features of the selected methods will be discussed.<br/>
