As dispersants of coal water slurry a series of poly(styrene<i>-co-</i>maleic anhydride aminobenzene sulfonate)s (SMASS) were synthesized with different grafting degrees (0.28, 0.49, 1.08 and 1.85) of benzene sulfonate groups. Experimental results showed that both the rheological properties and stability of coal water slurry were improved by SMASS, and the optimized grafting ratio of SMASS is 0.28.
