Carboxylic acid-containing hydrophobic pockets of different shapes were created within water-soluble molecularly imprinted nanoparticle (MINPs). The pKa value of the acid was determined by the molecular recognition properties of the MINPs and was found to be influenced by the shape of the hydrophobic pocket. The carboxylic acid could be further functionalized with catalytic groups to convert the MINPs into enzyme-mimicking nanoparticles.
