A key factor inhibiting public acceptance of the use of actinides as nuclear fuel for civilian energy production is the production of radioactive wastes and how to safely store them. Because of this, the development of new materials for isolation, rapid detection, or remediation of actinides has been of interest, but the characterizatino and scientific study of actinide complexes also raises waste and environmental issues. Here, we describe the synthesis and characterization of a series of Schiff based ligands designed as chemosensors for uranyl. The use of a microspectrophotometer allows for microfluidic sensing and characterization of reactions using UV-Vis and fluorescence on sub-nanoliter droplets. The eletrochemistry of a series of these metal complexes is also presented.
