Environmental protection and waste prevention are indispensable part of modern scientific research around the planet. A comparatively recent trend in chemical synthesis is to develop green methodologies to synthesize valuable molecular scaffold and subsequent derivatization of the scaffold targeted to medicinally privileged molecules. The principles of green chemistry mainly require reduction or removal of hazardous solvent/catalyst/additive/solid support, prolonged reaction period, tedious work-up procedure etc. The use of green solvent like water, green techniques (like controlled microwave exposure, sonication etc.), shorter reaction period and easy work-up procedure are important aspects of green chemistry. One-pot multicomponent synthesis of targeted pharmacophore using green technique under aqueous medium using eco-friendly catalyst and conservation of atom-economy are considered as greener reaction route. On the other hand, azaheterocycles are prevalent in nature among which pyranopyrazole moiety is an important pharmacophore that is present in several drugs (both synthetic and natural). As a part of our ongoing research leading to the development of greener methodologies a new greener procedure has been developed to synthesize diversely substituted pyranopyrazoles via one pot, four component cascade reaction strategy using bismuth nitrate pentahydrate as green catalyst in water. A series of diversely substituted aldehydes and 1,3-diketo compounds are used to developed this general procedure.
