Hydroxamate siderophores are secreted by microbes to gather iron from the environment, but can also bind transurantic metals such as plutonium. Understanding the precise mechanistic steps in siderophore-metal binding will deepen our understanding of multi-dentate binding reactions. Using scalar-relativistic density functional theory, transition states for the elementary reactions in possible reaction mechanisms are presented.
