In this undergraduate summer research project, the effect of concentration, solvent, and nanoparticle concentration on 9ACA photophysical behaviour was studied through Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and fluorimetry. Two concentrations of 9ACA were tested in ethanol, water, and chloroform. Absorption and fluorescence results depict a 9ACA species dependency in relation to the nature of the solvent. Ethanol exhibits monomeric forms present in low concentrations of 9ACA while dimerization of 9ACA can occur in higher concentrations. Excimer formation if inhibited in water while in chloroform, excimer is the dominant species. Gold nanoparticle additions highlight the nature of the interaction between the metal core and the effect of the binding agent on interparticle equilibria. Chloroform poses as an ideal solvent for 9ACA. In addition, gold plasmonic resonance can affect 9ACA radiative process only if a hydrophobic stabilizer is strongly attached to the metal surface. This system proves to be greatly dependent upon the experimental conditions, resulting in a highly versatile system.
