N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are widely used as organocatalysts and ligands for metal catalysis. We have explored a new chiral NHC design combining central and axial chirality, as illustrated by structures 2 and 3. Details of their synthesis from chiral anilines (1) and application to several organocatalytic transformations will be presented.
