The talk explores creativity in design of experiments and equipment. Several examples of work performed under leadership of Prof. Steven H. Strauss are examined to illustrate common themes behind effective experimentation. Hardware design and practical limitations of equipment are discussed. The importance of reproducibility and error estimation is illustrated. Examples of unexpected interactions and confounding from chemistry and engineering are presented and discussed. The talk introduces response surface analysis and expand on why sometimes it is a good practice to vary several experimental variables at the same time.
