The behavior of small organic molecules at air/water interfaces has been extensively studied, providing valuable insight to fields from atmospheric aerosol science to cosmetics. However, information on more complex, multi-component systems has been elusive, and requires advances in surface techniques to untangle the myriad contributions to the data. We find that a combination of surface spectroscopy, surface tensiometry and computational modeling allows for more complex interfacial systems to be probed. We have used this triad approach to explore environmental surface chemistry: from acidic gas uptake on amine surfaces to hydration effects of organic species. By allowing probing of more diverse systems, this approach, along with others in the field, are advancing current understanding of environmental surfaces. This presentation will report on various environmental systems currently under study using this approach, providing insight into the chemistry and behavior of these environmentally relevant surface systems.
