Halogen atoms play an important role in tropospheric chemistry, influencing the abundance of ozone and hydrocarbons. N2O5 is a NOx reservoir species that provides an effective pathway to transport halogen-containing compounds such as ClNO2 into the atmosphere through reactions with Cl- in sea spray aerosols. We monitor the production of halogen species through the reaction of N2O5 with cold salty water. Our experiments utilize a molecular beam of N2O5 that is directed at the surface of salty water at -60 °C in vacuum. Reaction products then desorb from solution and are chopped into pulses before arriving at a quadrupole mass spectrometer, allowing us to identify their mass and energy distribution. Salty mixtures containing Cl-, Br-, and I- will be used to study competitive halide-N2O5 reactions and to determine product residence times in solution.
