In this study, we developed core-shell magnetic titania nanospheres through a solvothermal process followed by a layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique. The magnetic ferrite core was tailor-designed by tuning the reaction parameters such as the concentrations of metal salts precursors, the species and concentrations of polymer surfactants, and the reaction time. The coating layer of TiO<sub>2</sub> was fabricated by LbL adsorption between water soluble polyelectrolytes and an aqueous stable titania precursor. The coating layer of titania was turned into crystalline form by reflux heating of the aqueous solution and pure TiO<sub>2 </sub>layer was obtained by calcining the coated nanoparticles at high temperature. The synthesized nanomaterials were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution-TEM, and porosimetry analysis. We also applied the nanocomposites to the photocatalytic destruction of microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a highly toxic cyanotoxin. The performance of the catalysts was evaluated at different solution pH values, dosages of catalyst, and initial MC-LR concentrations.
