The Stony Brook University chapter believes that chemistry literacy and science communication are two things that the education system should stress. Every year, our chapter involves itself with two school districts in Suffolk, NY: the Three Village School District and the Northport-East Northport School District. To promote chemistry literacy, students in our chapter visit elementary schools for a day and put on interactive demonstrations highlighting different aspects of chemistry that the students may encounter in their daily lives. Chapter members teach them about density, solutions, and properties of different elements. The chapter also puts on demonstrations for Stony Brook students’ families during Family Weekend in the fall. To promote science communication, chapter members go to Setauket Elementary School to be judges for their science fair. In the spring, for Stony Brook’s Admitted Students Day, the ACS chapter hosts an undergraduate poster session, so that students in the chemistry department can get experience talking about their research to people who do not have a chemical background.
