Amomaxins A and B (1-2) are a pair of architecturally novel nine-membered carbocyclic norditerpenes isolated from the medicinal tropical plant Amomum maximum. Besides their unprecedented rearranged labdane structures, one of them (cf. 2) possesses anti-inflammatory activity, manifested by NO-inhibition in macrophages. Our efforts aimed at establishing a viable enantioselective pathway to 1-2 will be described.
