Some enzymes work by activating small molecules such as O<sub>2</sub> and NH<sub>2</sub>OH. Through such reactions, these enzymes generate potent species that facilitate difficult chemical reactions such as methane or ammonia hydroxylation. In other contexts, these reactions are vital to energy transduction processes. This talk will present cases in which synchrotron-based inelastic X-ray scattering techniques such as valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopy (V2C XES), 1s2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS), and X-ray Raman scattering (XRS) are used to monitor the outcomes of small molecule activation by transition metal centers in metalloenzymes and in bio-inspired coordination complexes.
