The Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) contains over 800,000 experimentally determined small molecule crystal structures. That’s every single published crystal structure of organic or metal organic compounds. It is used by scientists working in almost 2000 sites spread over 70 countries. Over 60,000 new entries added annually and many, many transactions and interactions go on behind the scenes as structures are shared with authors, publishers, reviewers and referees. This requires complex informatics as well as sophisticated search, analysis and visualization software for the scientific community.<br/>This is big business – and it costs money. Despite this individual structures are available for free to anyone at the click of a button and we curate and share crystallographers structures at no cost to them. Forever.<br/>This presentation, timed to coincide with the end of the 50th anniversary year of the Cambridge Structural Database, will explore the computer based chemical software we have developed, how the collection of 800,000 structures can be used for molecular design but most importantly address the past, present and future business models of sharing chemical data.
