A novel catalytic membrane coated with CuMn2O4 particles was fabricated with sol–gel method to degrade benzophenone-3 (BP-3), a typical UV absorber, from water. First, the CuMn2O4 particles were synthesized with sol–gel method and showed excellent catalytic activity (Fig.1(A)). The XRD analysis (Fig.1(B)) revealed the particles consisted of CuMn2O4 and CuO with high crystallization degree, but the content of latter was lesser. CuMn2O4 particles showed conglomerates of cubic crystal morphology and the average size varied from 0.1 to 0.3 μm (Fig.1(C)) that was suitable for loading on the ceramic membrane. The ceramic membrane coated with CuMn2O4 particles showed remarkable activity in catalytic ozonation (Fig.4(D)). The coated catalytic membrane with CuMn2O4 particles with dipping 180 min (76.6%) showed highest performance than that with dipping 120 min (76.5%) or 60 min (71.2%). The performance and surface catalytic layer were very stable and concentration of leached metal ions was very slight. Furthermore, the increase of EC50-72h with C. vulgaris as probe after catalytic ozonation with coated ceramic membrane also suggested a reduction in the toxicity (Table1). The ceramic membrane coated with CuMn2O4 particles catalytic ozonation is optional for BP-3 degradation from aqueous.
