Metal-containing organic polymers are of increasing interest as metal ions can be used for the fine-tuning of the macromolecular properties of polymers, including sensing, self-healing properties, and crystallinity. polyMOFs are a new class of polymer metal-organic framework (MOF) hybrid materials that use polymers containing metal-binding groups to create crystalline, porous, three-dimensional structures by coordination chemistry. We previously reported the use of an amorphous, non-porous polymer containing aromatic dicarboxylic acids to synthesize materials with high crystallinity and porosity. Currently, little is known about how the topology of polymer ligands affects the development of polyMOFs.<br/>Herein we expand our knowledge of polyMOFs by exploring different topologies of the polymer ligands and determining the extent to which they produce highly-ordered, porous materials. Using acyclic diene metathesis polymerization (ADMET), polymers of higher molecular weight than previously reported were synthesized. It was determined that larger polymers with appropriate methylene spacers still produce polyMOFs. Investigating the topology of polymers that form polyMOFs increases our understanding of the connection between polymers and metal-organic frameworks.
