Organic material at the gas-aerosol interface can impact aerosol chemistry and physics in unique ways. I will discuss recent collaborative experimental work investigating the mechanisms and kinetics of photoactivator chemistry in and on aerosols, and the implementation of these mechanisms into a photochemical box model of gas-aerosol chemistry (GAMMA) for assessment of their potential atmospheric impact. I will also show evidence demonstrating the detection of light-absorbing organic species at the gas-aerosol interface of submicron aerosols in situ using nonlinear optics for the first time.
