This project investigated and optimizing the conditions for digesting of hemoglobin into small fragments. Specifically, the purpose of this project was a model study system for the creation of a medical device. The device will be dedicated to the long term assessment of blood sugar homeostasis especially in patients suffering from diabetes type I or type II. The device contains an electrochemical detection system coupled to enzymes which can convert the blood glucose into a low molecular weight substance which in turn can easily processed into a signal. The enzymes are coupled together and include a protease, and an oxidase. The estimated benefit from this diabetic diagnostic device is great since the research applies to the biomedical technology and biomedical engineering field.
