Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are highly crystalline three-dimensional polymeric structures whose nanoporous properties make ideal solid-state molecular hosts for a variety of analytical purposes. Using molecular design and post-synthetic modification, a Zr-based MOF has been prepared incorporating highly insoluble polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) linkers. The large pore size and extended electronic conjugation could find applications in adsorption and detection of other PAHs and heavy-metal contaminants present in environmental samples. The approach followed here includes the design and synthesis of highly soluble MOF linkers that are subsequently planarized by way of post-synthetic cyclodehydrogenation in a water-stable MOF.
