Sterically hindered amines play an important role in medicinal chemistry and are prevalent in a range of natural products. Despite their significance, construction of this structural motif remains a significant synthetic challenge. We have recently reported a copper-catalyzed radical addition with nitroso compounds to access these compounds. This method is mild, functional group tolerant, and operationally simple. Herein, we will discuss the development and scope of this chemistry and describe new applications toward the synthesis of alkaloid natural products.
